The Thessaloniki International Symposium in World Affairs

28-30 September 2012

About the Symposium

On the occasion of the centenary of Thessaloniki’s free existence (1912-2012), the Municipality of Thessaloniki, in cooperation with Navarino Network and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, organizes the first “Thessaloniki International Symposium in World Affairs” between September 28 and 30, 2012, at “Olympion” in Aristotelous Square. The aim of this initiative is to support the international perspectives of Thessaloniki and to establish the Symposium as an annual meeting of experts on important international developments.

This year’s Symposium will revolve around three broad thematic axes:

1. Friday 28/9/2012, 17:00-21:00
"The Rise (and fall and rise) of China"

With Jonathan Spence, Sterling Professor of History Emeritus at Yale University, and author of the book "The Search for Modern China".

2. Saturday 29/9/2012, 11:00-15:00 "Islam and the Arab Spring"

With James Piscatori, Professor of International Relations at Durham University, expert on Islam and Islamic political movements.

The Venue

Located in the downtown area of Thessaloniki, on the Plateia Aristotelous, Olympion Cinema is a popular cinema hall. The grand facade of the theater, housed in an impressive building that was built in the 1920s, looks especially beautiful in the night, when it is all alight and glowing. The theater is also one of the venues of the Thessaloniki International Film Festival.
